How your blood test works
Getting a private blood test with Solasta is simple and straightforward. Here's exactly what happens — from ordering your test to discussing your results with a GP.
Your journey, step by step
Order your test
Choose and purchase your test online. You'll receive confirmation and any documents needed for your appointment.
Book your blood draw
Pick a time that suits you. We'll send your appointment confirmation, clinic location and visit instructions.
Prepare for your test
Follow any instructions provided — for example, fasting for 8–12 hours if required, and avoiding alcohol and intense exercise.
Attend your appointment
A trained phlebotomist takes a small sample from your arm and labels everything correctly. It only takes a few minutes.
Sample goes to the lab
Your sample is securely packaged and sent to our local laboratory. There's nothing for you to post — it's all handled for you.
Receive your results
You'll be notified when your results are ready, and a GP will review them and talk you through everything on a 15-minute call.
What happens at your appointment
A venous blood draw is a routine test where a small sample is taken from a vein, usually in your arm. Most appointments are quick and straightforward — here's what to do and what to expect at each stage.
Before your appointment
What you should do
- Read any instructions provided when you booked.
- Bring ID and your appointment details.
- Drink water beforehand (unless told otherwise) — good hydration makes veins easier to find.
- Wear loose or short sleeves so your arm is easy to access.
- Continue your usual medication unless specifically advised not to.
- Tell us in advance if you have a history of fainting, difficult veins or a latex allergy — call 028 40 648 486.
What to expect
- If fasting is required, you'll be asked not to eat or drink anything except water for a set number of hours.
- If no fasting is required, you can usually eat and drink normally.
At the clinic
What you should do
- Arrive on time for your appointment.
- Let reception know if you feel unwell, anxious or need assistance.
- Mention any recent illness, pregnancy or medication changes if relevant.
What to expect
- You may be asked to confirm your name, date of birth and the tests requested.
- A trained healthcare professional will invite you into the testing room.
- The procedure usually only takes a few minutes.
During the test
What you should do
- Sit comfortably and keep your arm relaxed and still.
- Follow any instructions, such as making a fist.
- Tell the clinician straight away if you feel dizzy, uncomfortable or anxious.
What to expect
- A tourniquet may be placed around your upper arm briefly.
- The skin is cleaned before the needle is inserted.
- You may feel a small sharp scratch or brief sting.
- One or more tubes may be collected, depending on the tests requested.
- The needle is then removed and gentle pressure applied.
After the test
What you should do
- Keep pressure on the site for a few minutes if advised.
- Leave the dressing in place for at least 15–30 minutes.
- Avoid heavy lifting with that arm for the rest of the day if possible.
- Eat and drink normally afterwards unless told otherwise.
- If you feel light-headed, sit down and let a staff member know before leaving.
What to expect
- Mild bruising or tenderness can happen and usually settles quickly.
- If you have ongoing bleeding, increasing pain, swelling or signs of infection, seek medical advice promptly.
Quick preparation checklist
Check if you need to fast
Some tests need fasting (typically 8–12 hours, water only) while others don't. Always follow the instructions provided when you booked.
Stay hydrated
Drink water beforehand unless told otherwise — being well hydrated makes your veins easier to find and the draw more comfortable.
Bring ID and wear easy sleeves
Bring a form of identification and your appointment details, and wear loose or short sleeves so your arm can be accessed easily.
Tell us in advance
Let the team know ahead of time if you've ever fainted during a blood test, have difficult veins, or have a latex allergy — call 028 40 648 486.
Getting your results
Your results are reviewed carefully so you receive clear, professional guidance — not just a set of numbers. Once your sample reaches the local laboratory, results are usually available within 48 hours.
Every Solasta health check includes a mandatory GP interpretation of your results.
