Glaucoma

Specialist-led detection, monitoring and treatment to protect your sight

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that progressively damage the optic nerve — the vital connection between your eye and brain — often linked to raised pressure inside the eye. Left untreated it can cause irreversible sight loss, which is why early detection and expert care matter so much. Our experienced ophthalmologists use cutting-edge imaging and advanced laser and surgical technology to preserve your vision and protect your eye health.

What is glaucoma?

The optic nerve and eye pressure

Damage in glaucoma is usually linked to a build-up of pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure), which gradually harms the optic nerve. Because it often develops slowly and painlessly, it can progress unnoticed — so regular checks are vital.

Our specialist-led service covers the full spectrum of care, from precise diagnosis through to medical, laser and surgical treatment — all tailored to you and your vision.

Symptoms — the “silent thief of sight”

Glaucoma can progress without any noticeable symptoms — many people only notice once significant vision has been lost. If you experience any of the warning signs below, book a comprehensive eye examination promptly.
Gradual loss of peripheral (side) vision
Blurred or patchy vision
Eye pain or pressure (in some types)
Seeing haloes around lights
Sudden loss of vision (acute glaucoma)

Our glaucoma treatment options

The right treatment depends on the type and stage of your glaucoma. Our focus is always on safe, long-term pressure control and preserving your vision — starting with the least invasive option that's effective for you.

Glaucoma treatment options
1. MedicationPrescription eye drops are often the first step — gently lowering eye pressure to protect the optic nerve.
2. Laser treatmentSelective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) and Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI) — effective outpatient procedures that improve fluid drainage and control eye pressure.
3. Glaucoma surgeryFor more advanced cases, Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) or traditional filtration surgery (trabeculectomy), focused on safe, long-term pressure control and vision preservation.

Glaucoma FAQs

Does glaucoma have symptoms?
Often not in the early stages — glaucoma is known as “the silent thief of sight” because damage can occur before you notice any change. That's why regular eye checks are so important, especially as you get older or if it runs in your family.
Can glaucoma be cured?
There is no cure, but with treatment the pressure in the eye can be controlled to prevent or slow further damage. Vision already lost cannot be restored, which is why early detection and ongoing monitoring are key to protecting your sight.
Is glaucoma hereditary?
A family history of glaucoma increases your risk, so it's worth telling us if a close relative has been affected. Those at higher risk may benefit from earlier and more frequent screening.
Is laser treatment painful?
Laser procedures such as SLT and LPI are carried out as outpatient treatments with the eye numbed using drops. They're usually quick and well tolerated, with most people feeling little more than brief flashes of light or mild pressure.
How often will I need monitoring?
This depends on the type and severity of your glaucoma. Most people need regular follow-ups to keep eye pressure controlled and check for any progression — your consultant will set a schedule that's right for you.
