Can I get TRT on the NHS?

The short answer, the NHS thresholds, and a faster, personalised alternative

Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) can make a real difference to energy, mood and quality of life for men with low testosterone. But getting it on the NHS isn't always straightforward — here's what to expect, and how a private route compares.

The short answer: Yes — in some cases you can receive TRT through the NHS. You'll usually begin by visiting your GP and requesting a testosterone blood test. In practice, though, many men report long waiting times or being turned away.

Getting TRT on the NHS

The NHS threshold for testosterone treatment is lower than that used by most private clinics. NHS guidelines often require testosterone levels to be below around 8 nmol/L before treatment is considered — even though many men experience symptoms of low testosterone, such as tiredness, low libido and reduced energy, at higher levels than this.

That gap is why some men find themselves living with symptoms while being told their results don't yet meet the threshold for treatment.

NHS vs Solasta

The NHS route

  • You start with your GP and a testosterone blood test
  • Treatment is often only considered once levels fall below around 8 nmol/L
  • Options may be limited to gels or infrequent injections
  • Many men report long waiting times — or being turned away despite symptoms

The Solasta approach

  • We typically consider treatment with two confirmed results below 15 nmol/L
  • Data-driven, personalised TRT protocols tailored to you
  • Effective, timely and optimised testosterone therapy
  • Ongoing support from an experienced clinical team throughout

Signs of low testosterone

TRT FAQs

How do I get started with TRT at Solasta?
Book a consultation and we'll arrange the appropriate testosterone blood tests and review your symptoms. If treatment is suitable, we create a personalised plan and support you throughout.
What if the NHS won't treat me?
Many men sit between the NHS treatment threshold and the point at which their symptoms appear. We assess at a lower, symptom-led threshold — two confirmed results below 15 nmol/L — so we can often help where NHS options are limited.
Is private TRT safe and monitored?
Testosterone replacement therapy is a prescription-only treatment provided only after assessment and blood tests, where clinically appropriate. Your therapy is reviewed and monitored by our clinical team on an ongoing basis.
