Professor Colin Willoughby

Professor Willoughby is a Professor of Ophthalmology in Ulster University and a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust where he practices in cataract surgery and glaucoma.

Professor Willoughby has trained in Liverpool and Canada and has worked as a clinical-academic in Queen’s University Belfast, the University of Liverpool, and Ulster University. He runs an active laboratory programme which uses genomic information and technologies to understand ocular biology and mechanisms, in health and disease states. The main aim of his research is to improve the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of two major worldwide blinding disorders: corneal blindness and glaucoma. He is a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the International Society for Eye Research and lectures nationally and internationally on glaucoma, corneal diseases and genetics.

Miss Dimple Patel

Miss Patel is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Royal Victoria Hospital. She completed her training in Northern Ireland followed by a fellowship in the Royal Victoria Eye & Ear Hospital, Melbourne.

Miss Patel joins Solasta, bringing over 15 years of experience in the industry. She has a specialist interest in cataract treatment and has performed over 4,000 cataract surgeries.

Her specialist interests are cataract, corneal and anterior segment diseases.

Mr. Muralidharan Upendran

Mr. Muralidharan Upendran is a Consultant Ophthalmologist based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He has over 21 years of clinical experience and over 18 years of specialist experience in ophthalmology.

Mr. Upendran specialises in both medical and surgical ophthalmology and has special interests in cataracts, retinal disease and macular disease.

Mr. Upendran received his medical degree in 2000 from Kasturba Medical College, India. He later completed his Master of Surgery degree in Ophthalmology at Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, India in 2003. He became a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 2006 and became a Fellow in 2012. He also completed a Fellowship in Vitreo-retinal Surgery at Birmingham and Midland Eye Center in 2014.

Mr Sam Dowlet

Mr Samir Dowlut’s journey in Ophthalmology commenced with his graduation from the University of Birmingham in 2008.

Following this, he embarked in comprehensive Ophthalmology training (Northern Ireland), culminating in his completion of the program in August 2018.

Mr Dowlut completed fellowships in medical retina/vitreoretinal surgery at Southend NHS Hospital, followed by an immersive experience in high-volume vitreoretinal surgery at Moorfield’s Eye Hospital.
